my inheritance

for mom & dad

thirty five thousand feet above
my racing heart, charged
with the familiar fear
of flight,
longing for the ground–
gravity’s jutting stronghold.

and yet:

awakening in my blue veins
is the proud, unbounded blood
of my parents
a ruddy young pilot,
white-gloved stewardess
unafraid to soar–

theirs is the bright expanse
declaring now
as the clouds bow
and the earth fades:

my inheritance is the sky
